Proteins/Amino acids Structure Flashcards
Protein
A polymer consisting of monomer amino acids
A chain of amino acids is also called
a polipeptide
Covalent bonds that join amino acids are also called
peptide bonds
Amino acid structure (MUST KNOW VERY WELL)
Amino acids have 3 components. What are these? ESSAY QUESTION
1) amino group (-NH2)
2)Carboxyl group (-COOH)
3) R group/side chain (different for each amino acid)
the process by which 2 amino acids join together, where water is lost and a peptide bond forms is called
dehydration synthesis
Which 2 atoms join when 2 amino acids create a peptide bond?
C and N
The primary structure of a protein
describes the sequence of amino acids
Secondary structure
(1) describes the shape of the protein as a result of hydrogen bonding between amino acids
(2) Two basic shapes: alpha helix or beta pleated
Tertiary structure
- Describes the complete 3D folding pattern of the protein
- Som parts are straight, some have alpha helix folding, some parts beta pleating
Quarternary structure
Multiple tertiary structures combined
(figure shows 2 alpha and 2 beta structures)
