What are the different types of need an individual might have?
Physical ill health
Mental ill health
Learning disability
Physical and sensory disabilities
Physical and mental ill health
When supporting people with physical and mental illnesses, a multi-disciplinary approach is usual and normally essential.
People with mental health problems often have associated physical ill health. Poor physical health can often lead to serious anxiety and depression.
Mental illness is difficult to define and therefore difficult to monitor. What is regarded as normal and acceptable behaviour varies from one society to another, and at different times in history.
What are children’s entitlements?
According to EYFS curriculum, all children are entitled to learning and development in three prime areas and four specific core areas:
Prime areas:
Communication and language
Physical development
Personal, social and emotional development.
Core areas:
Literacy
Mathematics,
Understanding the world
Expressive arts and design
What are the specific HSC needs in later adulthood?
Treatment of developing or progressing physical and mental conditions:
-treatment and support to manage conditions such as arthritis, dementia, Alzheimer’s, sensory impairments.
- treatment involving surgical intervention and physiotherapy in case of broken hip, arm or joint replacement etc.
- help at home with appliances; meals or at a a care/nursing home.
Involvement of family and friends :
- in case of dementia or Alzheimer’s, the person can be supported if they are unable to express needs and preferences.
- families can take advice from geriatrics on ways to support the person and themselves
Interventions to maintain physical and mental health.
-exercise programmes and guidance to prevent osteoporosis and falls.
-guidance on nutrition to avoid obesity and ensuring a healthy diet.
-ensuring oral health; sight and hearing tests.
-screening and assessments for early diagnosis of conditions.
