public sector
organisations which are financed and directly managed by the government
Private sector
organisations run as commercial, profit-making businesses
Voluntary sector
non-profit making organisations which provide services alongside (usually charities with paid staff as well as volunteers)
primary care
Description:
The first point of contact, like a GP, who gives access to services and refers them to specialists (secondary care) where necessary.
Examples:
Dental practices
pharmacies
Optometrists
secondary care
Description:
Services provided by medical specialists who are usually referred (by primary care).
This is centralised and usually takes place in hospitals. Members of public and emergency services have direct access to A&E.

Cardiologists
Urologists
Orthopaedic surgeons
radiologists
tertiary care
Description:
Provides specialist and often complex care after referral by health specialists
Examples:
Spinal injury units
Hospice support
