unit 2 KA3 - metabolic rate Flashcards
how can you measure oxygen consumption to compare metabolic rates?
respirometers or oxygen probes
how can you measure carbon dioxide production to compare metabolic rates?
carbon dioxide probes
how can you measure heat production to compare metabolic rates?
calorimeters
do organisms with high metabolic rates require more efficient delivery of oxygen to cells?
yeh obvi
what is the order of metabolic rate from highest to lowest for mammals, fish, birds, reptiles and amphibians?
birds, mammals, ampihibians, reptiles, fish
describe the anatomy and physiology of heart chambers and circulatory systems in birds and mammals
they have a complete double circulatory system consisting of two atria and two ventricles. this means the blood flows through the heart twice during one cardiac cycle, due to the 2 atria, and the oxygenated and deoxygenated blood are not mixed due to the 2 ventricles, making it a complate double.
describe the anatomy and physiology of heart chambers and circulatory systems in amphibians and most reptiles
an incomplete double circulatory system consisting of 2 atria and one ventricle. blood flows through heart twice in one cycle, hence the double, due to the 2 atria, although the oxygenated blood and the deoxygenated blood are mixed due to the 1 ventricle, hence the incomplete.
describe the anatomy and physiology of heart chambers and circulatory systems in fish
single circulatory system consisting of one atrium and one ventricle.
why are complete double circulatory systems the most efficient?
they enable higher metabolic rates to be maintained as there is no mixing of the oxygenated and deoxygenated blood and the oxygenated blood can be pumped out at a higher pressure. this enables more efficient oxygen delivery to cells
