Unit 2 Definitions Flashcards
Herd immunity
When a sufficiently large proportion of the population has been vaccinated, making it difficult for individuals who haven’t to become infected.
Passive immunity
Produced by the introduction of antibodies into the individual from an outside source.
Active immunity
Produced by stimulating the production of antibodies by the individuals own immune system.
Natural active immunity
Results from an individual becoming infected with a disease under normal circumstances.
Artificial immunity
Involves inducing an immune response in an individual, without them suffering the symptoms of the disease.
Reverse transcriptase
Catalyses the production of DNA from DNA.
Explain how plotting future data on a log scale would show whether a result was exponential.
Exponential curve becomes straight line plot on a log scale
Pathogen
A bacterium, virus or other microorganism that can cause disease
Golgi apparatus
Modifies and concentrates proteins and lipids from the RER and packages them in vesicles.
Pancreas
Large gland below the stomach.
Produces a secretion called pancreatic juice.
This contains processes which hydrolyse proteins.

Why is it important to cut a thin section when examining specimens under a microscope?
- uses minimal layers of cells
- detail can be obscured by cell beneath
- let’s light pass through
