Unit 2 chem test Flashcards
What is an ionic, and examples
An ionic is a metal and a non mental. It has a high melting point and when it dissolves it can conduct. An example is MgCl2 (m and nm) another is NH4CL and tin (IV) oxide.
What is a covalent, and examples
It is 2 or more non metals. They are insulators (not good conductors), and have a low melting or boiling point. When they dissolve they do not conduct, and they share of molecules (in the image they share the molecule). Examples are C6H12P6 (3 diff elements and non metals, H2, hydrogen gas, and dinitrogen pentabromide.
what is Delton’s atomic theory
all matter is made of small individual particles called atoms all atoms of the same element have the same properties. Atoms of different elements can combine in specific ways to form new substances. This is called the billard ball model. It’s an eight ball.
what is thomason’s model
experimenting with electric currents in blast tube called cathode ray tubes. he determined that each atom was composed of smaller negatively charged particles. He calls electrons he thought that Adam was a positive sphere with negative electrons scattered throat. This is called the raisin bun or plum, putting model a circle with pluses and minuses in it.
what is the Ruthford and the gold foil experiment
Ruth Ford shot positively charge a particles from a radioactive source at a piece of gold foil. He predicted that the particles would pass right through and most of them did one in 10,000 particles bounced back deflected by something massive and positively charged the nucleus atoms positive charged, and most of its mass were concentrated at the centre of the electron surrounded the nucleus, and made up most of its volume, the picture is pretty much the diagram with the nucleus with the protons in it and the circles around it and the electrons floating around it
