Exact definition of a Settlement pattern
A settlement pattern refers to the way that a population including buildings and houses are organized and distributed within a landmass.
The three types of settlement patterns and how they are defined along with the timeline of change
Linear, scattered, clustered. Linear is the early settlement and it is set up in lines rose evenly spaced out the land is used effectively. Scattered rural there is no pattern it is random spacious, privacy, use of land depends on the area. Clustered urban high concentration of people in one area, land-use and availability is limited
The positive and negatives for each settlement pattern
Linear - A positive is it’s organized, easy movement and access to resources. Negative is all space/land is used does not allow for expansion
Scattered - A positive is allows for more economic development, privacy. Negative is somethings are not very accessible, little social contact
Clustered - A positive is easy access to basic knees. Negative is transportation is difficult, not much privacy, lack of land
The seven types of decisions governments make based on population density along with examples for each that we discussed in class
- Economic needs – job opportunities, manufacturing, agriculture, service
- Transportation needs dash trains, subways, street cars, city buses/highway, city roads
- Education needs
- Healthcare needs
- Use of land Dash residential, commercial, recreational
- Use of resources
How to calculate population density
To calculate population density you divide the total population by the land mass in km2.
The Difference between sparse and dense
Sparse is a low population density in relation to the area that contains it (low ratio of people to land). Dense is a high concentration of population in relation to the area that contains it (high ratio of people to land area).
The difference between population density and distribution
The difference between population distribution and population density is that distribution is the way people are spread across a given area. Density is the number of people per square kilometre
