Unit 2: Bone Reading Response Flashcards
Question 1 Why might you be able to jump longer if you have healthy fascia? (Katarina’s Response)
Healthy fascia can be compared to a built-in spring or trampoline because it is elastic when hydrated. Therefore, the fascia requires less muscle energy to generate movements like jumping, running, and other plyometric-type motions. A person would be able to jump longer because they are taking advantage of the springiness in their fascia to jump rather than only fatiguing their muscles resulting in increased stamina.
Question 2 What does Thomas mean when she refers to fascia as the largest sensory organ of the body? (Katarina’s Response)
Compared to muscles, proprioceptive fascia has six to ten times more sensory nerve receptors than the muscles according to Thomas’ research. Similarly, fascia has been found equal or superior to the retina, which is known for being one of the most sensory organs found in the human body.
Question 3 Why is brown fat considered “good” fat? (Katarina’s Response)
Brown fat is considered the “good” fat because this type of fat contains mitochondria which initiates the process of burning calories (rather than storing) and generating heat. Adults that have more brown fat appear youthful, lean, and maintain normal levels of blood sugar. Unlike white fat, brown fat does not put one at risk for developing diseases, cancers and other disabilities.
