Unit 2: 4 - Aerobic Respiration Flashcards
What can energy from aerobic respiration do?
Build larger molecules from smaller ones, Enable muscle contraction in animals, maintain a constant body temperature and build sugars, nitrates and other nutrients into amino acids in plants.
Give a word equation for aerobic respiration.
Glucose + Oxygen –> Carbon Dioxide + Water [+ Energy]
What effect does exercise have on blood vessels?
They widen (dilate) to allow a larger blood flow.
What can be used to detect aerobic respiration?
Limewater, as it detects CO2.
What is a by-product of anaerobic respiration?
Lactic acid
What is anaerobic respiration?
When muscles cannot get enough oxygen for aerobic respiration they respire anaerobically.
What is a cause of muscle fatigue?
A build up of lactic acid.
How is lactic acid removed from the muscles?
By blood flowing through the muscles.
What is lactic acid?
It is a substance released by glucose not being properly broken down during anaerobic respiration.
What is an oxygen debt?
The extra oxygen needed to completely break down the lactic acid.
