Unit 2: 2 - Organisms in the Environment Flashcards
What is the chlorophyll’s job?
To absorb the Sun’s light energy.
What organisms can carry out photosynthesis?
Green plants and algae.
Where is chlorophyll found?
In the chloroplasts.
What is the word equation for photosythesis?
Carbon dioxide + Water —(+ light energy)—> glucose + oxygen.
What is the by-product of photosythesis?
Oxygen.
What is some of the glucose converted into?
Insoluble starch (for storage)
How do we identify if there is starch in variegated leaves?
Using iodine solution. Patches of green will show blue-black showing photosynthesis has occurred.
What are variegated leaves?
Leaves with different colours on it.
What is a limiting factor (of photosynthesis)?
Anything which puts a cap on the rate of photosynthesis.
Give 3 limiting factors of photosynthesis.
- Lack of light
- Temparature
- Too little CO2.
Why does temperature effect photosynthesis?
Because enzymes become denatured (NOT dead) at the wrong temperatures.
Give 5 uses for soluble glucose.
- Converted into insoluble starch for storage
- Used for respiration
- Converted into fats and oils for storage
- Used to produce cellulose, which is used to strengthen cell walls
- Used to produce proteins.
Plant and agal cells also need what as well as water and CO2? Give an example.
Mineral ions like nitrate ions. These are obtained from the soil or water where they live.
A crop grower has to compare the ____ of plants grown indoors and outdoors to decide wether it is economically viable.
Biomass
Living organisms form _____.
Communities
What physical factors can affect the distribution of organisms? Give 5.
- Temparature
- Availability of nutrients
- Amount of light
- Availability of water
- Availability of oxygen or carbon dioxide.
What is quantitative data?
Data that uses numerical values.
What is a quadrat?
A square tool with individual sectors used to quantitatively discern the amount of plants in an area.
What is a transect?
A line that is places so a quadrat can be placed every x metres along it.
Give some control variables to take into account while using a quadrat and collecting data.
Time of day, field, time of year etc.
Why is sample size important?
Because not enough samples would be an unreliable representation of the population.
