Plato
- everything in the world is an imperfect copy of something that is perfect
-cannot be altered or destroyed
particular

essence or intrinsic nature
the way imperfect things draw from the form, the qualities of the form that the copy imitates
ex. roundness
-why we can identify the difference between a circle and triangle
monism
monist say that reality consists of ONE ALL ENCOMPASSING THING
- all particular things are manifestations of expressions of that ONE thing
idealist and materialist (two branches of monism)
idealist- say world is only made from ideas
materialist- world only made from matter
4 causes of natural being
(material)- physical properties
(formal)- structure or design
(agent)- force that bring something about
(final cause/purpose)- purpose of existing
ontological arguments
intended to prove with reason that God exists
Neoplatonism
- interpret Plato as a thinker who understands the external truth from the perspective of later christan ideology
- take the truth, view it from a Christan lens
