Seasonality effect
Dopamine receptor blocker; a “first-generation” antipsychotic drug
Chlorpromazine
Increased sensitivity of neurotransmitter receptors caused by damage to afferent axons or long-term blockage of neurotransmitter release
Supersensitivity
An atypical antipsychotic drug; blocks D4 receptors in the NAC
Clozapine
Decreased activity of the prefrontal cortex; believed to be responsible for the negative symptoms of schizophrenia
Hypofronality
Drug that has a very high affinity for particular receptor but activates that receptor less than the normal ligand does
Partial agonist
Serious mood disorder characterized by cyclical periods of mania and depression
Bipolar disorder
Serious mood disorder that consists of unremitting depression or periods of depression that do not alternate with periods of mania
Major depressive disorder (MDD)
Class of drugs used to treat depression; inhibits reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin but also affects other neurotransmitters
Tricyclic antidepressant
Chemical element used to treat bipolar disorder
Lithium
Brief electrical shock, applied to head, that results in electrical seizure; used therapeutically to alleviate severe depression
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)
