Unit 12 Flashcards
A hormone secreted by adipose tissue that decreases food intake and increases metabolic rate
Leptin
A surgical procedure that severs the brain stem, disconnecting hindbrain from forebrain
Decerebration
One of two peptide neurotransmitters found in a system of lateral hypothalamic neurons that stimulate appetite and reduce metabolic rate
Melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH)
One of two peptide neurotransmitters found in a system of lateral hypothalamic neurons that stimulate appetite and reduce metabolic rate, also called hypocretin
Orexin
A peptide neurotransmitter found in arcuate nucleus stimulating feeding and insulin and glucocorticoid secretion, decreases body temperature
Neuropeptide Y (NPY)
Neuropeptide that acts as an antagonist at MC4Rs and increases eating
AgRP
Nucleus in base of hypothalamus that controls secretions of anterior pituitary gland, contains NYP-secreting neurons
Arcuate nucleus
Nucleus of hypothalamus containing neurons involved in ANS and posterior pituitary gland
Paraventricular nucleus (PVN)
Cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript; peptide neurotransmitter that inhibits feeding
CART
Neuropeptide that acts as antagonist at MC4Rs and inhibits eating
α-MSH
A disorder that most frequently afflicts young women; exaggerated concern with overweight that leads to excessive dieting and often compulsive exercising; can lead to starvation
Anorexia nervosa
Bouts of excessive hunger and eating, often followed by forced vomiting or purging with laxatives
Bulimia nervosa
A disorder that includes bouts of excessive eating
Binge-eating disorder
