gender as a public issue
In understanding gender has a violence issue, how are men most affected?
Men are most likely to commit violent crime and they are most likely to be victims of extreme violent crime.
When understanding the waves of the women’s movement, what were the two main ideas relevant to the cause First Wave? Who were the main supporters?
The first wave, 1780-1920 consisted mainly of Christian women as major supporters.
Main Ideas:
1. Enlightenment thought I felt men and women are fundamentally the same
2. Social reformers - women participating in activism
What are 4 examples where women participated in activism during the first wave (1780-1920)?
- Abolition movement
- Temperance movement- against alcohol
- Structural reforms- Women working to provide better opportunities to other women
- Suffrage
When understanding the waves of the women’s movement, there were four main concerns addressed within the second wave (1960-1995), what were they?
- Employment issues
- Contraceptives and abortion- allowing women to make choices
- Sexual harassment
- Rape laws
During the second feminist wave, Betty Frieden published a book. What was it called, and why was it written?
Her book was titled The Feminine Mystique released in 1963.
It was published because women were in the workforce while men were at war, and when the men returned, women were forcibly removed from that space.
What was the purpose of the Royal Commission on the status of women (1967)?
It was meant to examine what the degree of gender inequality was and it found that women were not present anywhere in public life.
