Unit 12: Female Reproductive System Flashcards
What is the function of the labia majora?
Protection of inner structures
Which part of the ovary releases the secondary oocyte during ovulation?
Cortex
When does oogenesis begin in humans?
During fetal development
What triggers the completion of the first meiotic division in oogenesis?
Ovulation
What structure forms from the ruptured follicle after ovulation?
Corpus luteum
In which part of the uterine tube does fertilization usually occur?
Ampulla
What event typically triggers the start of menstruation?
Drop in estrogen and progesterone
Which phase of the uterine cycle occurs immediately after ovulation?
Secretory Phase
What happens immediately after a sperm successfully penetrates the egg (oocyte?)
oocyte completes meiosis II
Which extraembryonic membrane is responsible for forming the fetal part of the placenta?
chorion
Which structure forms during gastrulation and serves as the cite where cells migrate inward?
primitive streak
What is the primary hormone for stimulating hormones during labour?
Oxytocin
Compare and contrast the ovarian cycle and uterine cycles. How are the interrelated? explain the development of each stage in each cycle.
- Ovarian Cycle begins with follicular phase, Uterine Cycle begins with the menstrual phase. Follicles developing and shedding uterine lining.
- Follicular Phase continues, Proliferative Phase of Uterine Cycle begins. New functional layer of endometrium occurs.
- Ovulation Occurs; Secondary oocyte released.
- Final Phase of Ovarian Cycle = Luteal Phase. FInal Phase of Uterine cycle = Secretory Phase.
Corpus luteum is secreting progesterone which maintains and builds uterine lining and the impact of the uterine cycle is uterus becomes more vascularized and uterine glands develop.
What would happen if a mutation prevented development of the syncytiotrophoblast cell layer?
Syncytiotrophoblast is 1 of 2 early membranes that develops in blastocyst after implantation.
Without this layer, implantation will not occur therefore no secretion of hCG will occur; body will not receive implantation signal.
Without this layer; the uterine lining will degenerate and menstruation will occur.
