Unit 1 Vocab Flashcards
is the study of the form or structure of all living things, including plants, animals, and humans
Anatomy
is the study of how living things function or work (with those structures).
Physiology
the erect body position that serves as a “starting point” for describing positions and directions for the human body (arms at side w palms facing forward)
Anatomical Position
divides the body into right and left portions (vertical)
Sagittal Plane
divides the body into top and bottom portions (horizontal)
Transverse Plane (Magicians cut)
located toward the front side of the body, also includes subdivisions (thoracic cavity and abdominopelvic cavities)
Anterior (ventral) Body Cavity
located toward the back side of the body, including the spinal and cranial cavity
Posterior (Dorsal) Body Cavity
continues internal opening that includes the abdomen and pelvic cavities
Abdominopelvic Cavity
the internal opening that houses the heart and lungs
Thoracic Cavity
a state of regulated physiological balance
Homeostasis
a state in which there is a diminished ability for the organ systems to keep the body’s internal environment within normal ranges
Homeostatic Imbalance
all chemical reactions that occur within an organism to maintain life
Metabolism
mechanism that reverses a condition that has exceeded the normal homeostatic range to restore homeostasis
Negative Feedback
mechanism that further increases a condition that has exceeded the normal homeostatic range
Positive Feedback
