Define: Trade name
The name given to a drug by the pharmaceutical company; it is protected by a trademark and used by the company for marketing the drug
Define: pharmacy
the professional discipline dealing with the preparation and dispensing medication
Define: Median toxic dose
Drug dose that elicits a toxic response in 50% of the patients it is tested on
Define: Median lethal dose
The drug dose that causes death in 50% of animals its tested on
Define: Therapeutic index
Ratio used to determine safety of a drug. The larger the safer.
Toxic median dose divided by the median effective dose.
Define: Chemical Name
A drug name that is derived from the specific chemical structure of the compound.
Define: Generic Name
Name applied to a drug that is not protected by a trademark, often shortened chamical name
Define: Bioavailability
The extent to which a drug reaches systemic circulation
Define: over the counter drugs
drugs that can be purchased without a prescription
Define: Buccal
Referring to cheek. Drugs that are administered buccally are placed between the cheek and gum
Define: Potency
The strength of a drug

The study of how genetic variation can affect drug response

Administration of drugs other than alimentary canal, injection, transversally, topically

A ratio used to estimate the amount of a drug in the body relative to fluid volume of the body. Amount of drug divided by plasma concentration.

When drugs absorbed by stomach and intestine must first pass through the liver

Drugs designed and approved to treat rare diseases
Define: Pharmacotherapeutics
The study of how drugs are used in preventing and treating disease
Define: Off-label prescribing
Drug prescribed to treat a prescription other than those approved by FDA

Under the tongue. Enter body via venous drainage
Define: Proton pump
An enzyme that moves hydrogen across a cell membrane. “proton pump inhibitors” reduce the effects of stomach acid
