Unit 1 Section 3: Tissues, Organs and Systems Flashcards
Tissues
A tissue is a group of cells that are specialised to work together to carry out a particular function, IT can contain more than one type of cell.
Tissues Example: Squamous Epithelium tissue
surface lining in manny places of the body consisting of a single layer of flat cells. Provides a thin exchange surface for quick diffusion e.g. alveoli in the lungs
Tissues Example: Ciliated Epithelium
A layer of cells covered in Cilia, found on surfaces where things need to be moved. e.g. in the trachea to move mucus along
Tissues Example: Xylem Tissue
Plant tissue, that supports the plant and transports water around it, contains Xylem vessel cells and parenchyma cells.
Tissues Example: Phloem Tissue
Transports sugars around the plant, arranged in tubes and made up of sieve cells, companion cells and ordinary plant cells.
The sieve cells have end walls with holes in them so that sap can move easily through them, these walls are called Seive plates.
Organ
An organ is a group of different tissues that work together to perform a particular function.
Organ Example: Lungs
an animal organ to carry out gas exchange. Contain:
Squamous epithelium tissue (alveoli)
Ciliated Epithelium ticcue (Bronchi)
Elastic connective tissue & vascular tissue (blood vessels)
Organ Example: Leaf
a Plant organ for gas exchange and photosynthesis. Contains:
Palisade tissue
Epidermal Tissue
Xylem & Phloem Tissue
Organ systems
Organs work together forming systems, each with a specific function
Organ systems Example: The respiratory System
consists of All Organs, tissues and cells involved in gas exchange.
e.g. Lungs, trachea, nose, mouth & diaphragm
Organ systems Example: Circulatory System
All organs incolved in blood supply.
e.g. Heart, Arteries, Veins & Capillaries.
multicellular organisms work efficiently because…
They have different cells specialised for different functions. This is very advantageous because a specialised cell can carry out its function more effectively than an unspecialised cell.
Specialised Cells Can’t Do everything on their own…
Each cell depends on other cells to carry out the functions it can’t. for this to be effective Cells, Tissues & organs within within multicellular organisms must cooperate with eachother to keep the organism alive.
Coperation Example: Palisade Cell
Is good at photosynthesising, but not at absorbing water and minerals from the soil so it depends on root hair for this, and of course this works the other way too.
Coperation Example: Muscle Cells
great at moving your body but not at getting the oxgen they require, for this they rely on erythrocytes (RBC) to carry oxygen from the lungs.
