Unit 1: Protein Booklet Word Bank Flashcards
Optimum conditions
When an enzyme is most active
Hormone
A protein that is released from one part of the body that affects another part of the body.
Degradation
Group of enzymes which break down large molecules into smaller ones (e.g. amylase and catalase)
Substrate
Substance(s) that bind to an enzyme at the active site and is changed by the reaction
Antibody
Y-shaped protein that binds specifically to viruses and bacteria in our body. Part of our immune system.
Denatured
When the shape of the active site of an enzyme is altered make the enzyme no longer able to carry out it’s chemical reaction.
Enzyme
A protein catalyst; they speed up chemical reactions without being changed
Product
Substance(s) that are released from the active site at the end of a reaction
Complementary
The way a substrate fits into the enzyme’s active site.
Synthesis
Group of enzymes that turn small molecules into larger ones (e.g. phosphorylase)
Specific
The ability of an enzyme to speed up only one type of reaction
Lock and key
Model used to describe how enzymes work
Active site
Part of enzyme that is complementary to it’s substate
