Unit 1- Principals of Asepsis Flashcards
Aseptic Technique
Practices that aim to prevent infection in the patient
Lister
British surgeon to apply germ theory to surgery and prevent infection in wounds
Asepsis
Absence of pathogenic microbes in living tissue, prevent wound contamination by destroying microbes before they enter the wound
Antisepsis
Destruction of most microorganisms on animate/living objects, antiseptics used during skin prep and surgical scrubbing
Sterility
Absence of all microbial life, only on inanimate objects
Primary Aerial Bacteria Source
The surgeon
Scrubbing
Removes dirt and oil, reduces transient bacteria, depression of skin’s resident bacteria
Avagard
Alcohol based scrub, too much scrubbing breaks down skin barrier and exposes more microbes
Sterile Surgical Gloves
Inner surface lubricated with hydrogel, barrier between surgeon and patient
Closed Gloving
Most common, ensures hand doesn’t contact outside of the gown or glove
Assisted Gloving
To glove a team member, always do right hand first
