Get waiver signed, history, exam, diet, lab work, status, stabilization, pre surgery meds
Status

Dietary Restriction
Withhold food 6-12 hours before but allow water

Normal healthy patient

Patient with mild systemic disease
ASA 3
Patient with obvious systemic disease

Patient with severe systemic disease that is a constant threat to life

A patient that will not survive without the operation
Cerenia
Maropitant anti emetic
Pre Meds
Dexmedetomidine, midazolam, diazepam, hydromorphone, methadone, ketamine
Analgesia
NSAID, local anesthetic, and opioids
Halsted’s Surgical Principals
Asepsis, hemostasis, preservation of blood supply, gentle tissue handling, avoid tension on wound closure, accurately apposition tissue on wound closure, eliminate dead space
Clean Wound
Non contaminated, non traumatic, and non inflamed surgical site, GI, urinary, and respiratory tract not entered
Clean-Contaminated Wound
GI, urinary, or respiratory is entered under controlled conditions
Contaminated Wound
GI contents or infected urine spill into an open cavity
Dirty Wound
Old traumatic wounds with purulent discharge, devitalized tissue, hollow organ perforated
