Unit 1: Page 26: Protecting Data: Tools and Techniques Flashcards

Q

What are the six techniques for protecting data?

A

> Passwords - Limited access by ensuring users keep a secure password to access system.
Physical access control - prevented unauthorised access using locks, biometrics.
Digital certificates - Allows secure data transfer using public key encryption.
Protocols - Define data transfer processes to ensure secure transfer.
File permissions and access levels - Ensure access is restricted to those who need it.
**Backup and recovery procedures **- Ensure that data can be recovered following any loss of data.

Q

Describe Antivirus software and the reasons and need to be aware of.

A

Description:Detects and removes virusues and other malware from a commputer system.
**Reasons for using: **Protects systems from all forms of malware.
**Need to be aware of: **MUst be regulary updated as new viruses are created regularly.

Q

Describe Firewalls and the reasons and need to be aware of.

A

Description: Monitor network traffic into and out of an IT system; block suspicious traffic to prevent unauthorised access.
Reasons for using: Firewalls are key in preventing hacking attempts as well as worms
Need to be aware of: Firewalls are not 100% effective - Security holes can be exploited, e.g. in outdated software.

Q

Describe Encryption and the reasons and need to be aware of.

A

Description: The conversion of data into an unreadable code known as ciphertext.
Reasons for using: the most effective form of security, as encrypted data cannot be read without the encryption key.
Need to be aware of: Encryption keys must be maintained and kept secure. A lost key means data is irretrievable.

Q

Explain two reasons why data stored and transmitted are encrypted.

A

> We encrypt out hard disk do that anyone who gains access to our system cannot read our stored data.
We encrypt our data while it is being transmitted so that if it is intercepted it cannot be read.
