Unit 1 - Lesson 8: Plant Stems Flashcards
What are the 3 major roles of stems?
Supports the plant, transport link to all parts of plant for water and nutrients, stores water and carbohydrates
Are woody stems monocots or dicots?
Dicots
Are soft, flexible, green, short lived stems monocots ur dicots?
Monocots
Do monocots or dicots have lignin as well as cellulose in the cell walls?
Dicots, makes stem more rigid
What is the difference between primary and secondary growth? What type of growth do monocots and dicots experience?
Primary growth lengthens the stem, secondary growth grows the circumference. Dicots undergo both primary and secondary growth. Monocots undergo only primary growth.
How are vascular bundles arranged in dicot stems?
In a ring. The xylem create the annual rings in the wood that show how old a tree is. The amount of space between the rings shows the amount of water the tree had each year.
How are vascular bundles arranged in monocot stems?
Scattered throughout the stem
How do the presence of lateral meristems contribute to secondary growth?
Lateral meristems consist of the cork and vascular cambium. The vascular cambium increases the stem diameter by making new vascular tissue.
What are rhizomes?
Horizontal stems that grow underground (ginger)
What are bulbs?
Shortened, compressed stems surrounded by fleshy leaves (onions, tulips)
What are tubers?
Enlarged underground stems (potatoes)
What is another name for stolon stems?
Runners
What are stolons?
Horizontal stems that grow above ground along the surface of the soil (strawberries)
