Microscopy Flashcards
Body tube
Holds the eyepiece at the proper distance from the objective lens
Arm
Supports the body tube, use for carrying the microscope
Stage
Platform that supports the microscope slide
Base
Supports the microscope
Objective lens
Each contains a lens with a different power of magnification (4x - low power, 10x - medium power, 40x - high power) engraved on the objective.
Coarse-adjustment knob
Focuses the image under low power
Fine-adjustment knob
Sharpens the image under medium and high power magnification
Eyepiece (ocular lens)
Contains a magnifying lens (usually 10x power, engraved beside the lens) that you look through.
Revolving nosepiece
Holds and turns the objectives into viewing position
Stage clips
Holds the microscope slide in place
Condenser lens
Directs light to the object being viewed
Diaphragm
Controls the amount of light entering the body tube
Light source
Directs light through the diaphragm, the specimen, and the lenses. Some microscopes have a mirror instead of a light that must be adjusted to reflect light from the source into the body tube.
