Unit 1: Animal Cell Parts Flashcards
Cell membrane
Selective Barrier, controls the movement of substances in and out of cell, maintains internal environment and facilitates cell communication/signalling
Nucleus
Contains the chromosomes and instructions for cellular processes
Nuclear envelope
Double-membrane that encloses the nucleus. Separates DNA from cytoplasm and regulates the movement of molecules in and out of nucleus
Nuclear pore
Channel that regulates the movement of molecules between nucleus and cytoplasm
Nucleolus
Responsible for producing and assembling ribosomes
Chromatin
DNA and proteins that form the structure of chromosomes within nucleus
Nuclear sap
The fluid that maintains/supports shape and structure of the nucleus and its contenta
Cytoplasm
A medium where cell processes can occur, platform for metabolic activities, storage and transport of molecules
Mitochondria
Generate most of a cells energy (ATP) through cellular respiration
Golgi complex
Processes/packages proteins and lipid molecules, sorts to their final destinations distributes and also synthesizes carbohydrates
Centriole
Help organize microtubules, which play a role in separating chromosomes during division. Foundations of cilia and flagella (movement and sensing)
Microtubule
Maintains cell shape, intracellular transport, enables cell division (mitotic spindle, cilia/flagella)
Vacuole
Storage for water, nutrients and waste, maintains cell shape
Lysosome
Break down waste and digest materials inside cell
Micro body
Break down fats, alcohols and amino acids, detox peroxides
Microfilament
Muscle contraction, cell movement and division, structure and support cell shape
Ribosome
Protein synthesis, translate genetic code from messenger RNA into a sequence of amino acids then form proteins
Endoplasmic reticulum
Protein synthesis, folding, modification and transport. Lipid/steroid synthesis. Calcium storage
Hyaloplasm
Medium for cell processes, material transport, support and structure
