Unit 1-Intro to biology MK Flashcards
Testable question
Questions that can be answered through experiments and observing nature.
Non-testable question
Questions that cant be answered by observations or by evidence gathered through experiments
Quantitative
numbers
qualitative
quality
Trials
testing by evidence
Observation
Things you find based off of you looking around
Empirical evidence
info obtained through observation and documentation of a specific behavior and patterns or through experimentation
Data
facts gathered for reference or analysis
Models in science
a physical, mathematical and/or conceptual representation of a system of ideas, events or processes
Analogy
comparison between two things
Prototype
the original model of something
Hypothesis
a prediction on what will happen based off of data
Variable
factors that are manipulated to test a hypothesis
Procedure
official way of doing something
Precision
how close the measurements of the same item are to each other
Accuracy
how close a measurement is to its true value.
scientific method
the steps taken to establishing facts through testing and experimentation.
Control
an element that remains unchanged or unaffected by other elements
Constant
The element that stays unchanged throughout the experiment
Predict
Thinking of a possible outcome of an experiment
Independent variable
A variable that stands alone and isn’t changed by other variables
Infer
drawing conclusions based off of evidence
Dependent variable
A variable that you measure and is also affected during an experiment
Manipulated variable
A factor in an experiment that is purposefully changed
Responding variable
The variable that changes as a result of the manipulated variable
Sample size
the amount of people or observations included in a study
Validity
how accurately a specific method measures what it is supposed to measure.
Trends in data
the change of a component with time
Correlation
Describes relationships between components
Variability
shows how far apart data points are from each other and from the graph’s center
Mass
How much matter takes up an object
Volume
amount of space an object takes up
weight
the amount of force exerted on a thing by gravity
Percent
a value indicating hundredth parts of a quantity
Rate
how much a component changes relative to another component
Ratio
A comparison of two quotients using the letters a and b
Line graph
a graph that uses lines to connect data points
Bar graph
a type of graph where every column represents a value
Pie graph
shows the relationship between parts of a whole of a categorical value in a circle which divides each value into slices
Scatter plot
a graph that finds out relationships between two different components in a data-set
Claim
Stating that something is the case
Evidence
info that supports your claim
Reason
why the evidence matters.
Theory
An explanation of something in the natural world that includes laws, facts, and hypothesis.
bias
a flaw in collecting info
