How does smoking increase risk of CHD?
Increase blood cholesterol. Blood sticky. Nicotine makes heart beat faster. Carbon monoxide reduces oxygen in blood.
What is obesity?
20% + above ideal weight for height & build.
What are the problems associated with obesity?
CHD, hypertension, depression, stress, self conciousness, bullying.
Why is stir frying good?
Quick.
Doesn’t destroy much vitamin C.
How much exercise should we get per day?
60 minutes for adolescents, 30 minutes for adults.
2 facts about sugar?
Most adults & kids in UK eat more than recommended.
Food/drinks high in sugar contain lots of calories but few other nutrients.
Sugary food/drinks cause tooth decay, specially between meals.
Sugar in fruit less likely to cause tooth decay.
When is peak bone mass? How do we maximise it?
Age 25. Plenty of calcium & vitamin D, weight bearing exercise.
3 Sources of calcium
Soybeans
Dark leafy greens
Sardines
Fortified cereals
What is osteoporosis? Risk factors?
Disease where bones become brittle & easily broken. Impairs walking/moving.
Being female, family history, lots of dieting, few weight bearing activities, little calcium & vitamin D.
What is Diabetes & 2 types?
When blood glucose is high.
Type 1 - no insulin, unknown why, under 40s,
Treatment = insulin injections, balanced diet, exercise
Type 2 - not enough insulin, overweight, over 40s.
Treatment = diet change, weight loss, exercise
What is Coeliac disease?

Diarrhoea/constipation, cramps, anaemia.

Wheat, barley, oats & rye. - breads, cereals, porridge, pasta, pizza bases, pies, sausages.
Rice, fruit & vegetables, fish, meat, eggs, milk, cheese, pulses.
What should you do with muffins?
Don’t overmix.
Keep wet & dry separate as long as possible.
Get in oven ASAP
