Authoritarian personality
Distinct personal pattern of characteristics by strict adherence to convectional values and a belief to absolute obedience to authority. Dispositional explanation - emphasise a behaviour as seen being caused by someone owns personal characteristics.
F scale -
Used to measure authoritarian personality and sees what characteristics it uses to take it up.
Adorno developed the F scale (1950).
Individuals with this type of personality were rigid thinkers and those who respect authority. See the world as black and white.
Right-wing authoritarianism (later developed by) and variables -
Altemeyer refined the concept, identified a cluster of three of the original personality variables, these variables are associated with a right-wing attitude life.

Conventionalism (AP) -
An attachment to convectional norms or values.
Authoritarian aggression (AP) -
Aggressive feelings towards people who violate these norms.
Authoritarian submission (AP) -
Uncritical submission to legitimate authorities
Normative social influence -
When an individual conforms with the expectations of the majority in order to gain social approval or avoid social disapproval. Individual must feel they are under surveillance from the group. Humans are social species and need to gain a need for social companionship.
Informational social influence -
The result and desire to be right, looking at others to gain a sense of reality. More likely to occur if the situation is ambiguous, changes their behaviour in the line of the group. Shows elements of public and private attitudes.
Reciprocity -
Responding to the action of the caregiver with another action, the actions of one partner elicit a response from the other, Brazelton suggested that this basic rhythm is an important precursor for later communications. Allows the caregiver to anticipate their behaviour and respond appropriately and sensitively.
Interactional synchrony -
When two people interact they tend to mirror what the other person is doing, they tend to move in the same pattern explored by Meltzoff and Moore.
Critical period -
Seen around 3-6 months, those infants who do not form an attachment during this time will struggle to form attachments later on.
Internal working model -
A mental model of the world which enables individuals to predict and control their environment, it relates to their expectations of future relationships. Also is a schema.
