Ultrasound Flashcards
What are the basic components of an ultrasound machine?
- display screen
- transducer
- transducer cable
- keyboard
- power supply
- charging base (on butterfly models)
Name the transducer movements.
- tilting/fanning (short axis)
- sliding
- rotating
- rocking/heel-toe (long axis)
- compression
Define hypoechoic.
labels structure as “darker” than comparative structure
Define hyper echoic.
label structure as “lighter” than comparative structure
Define isoechoic.
structures are the same in echogenicity
Define anechoic.
structure is black; most likely fluid filled. not a comparative term like hyer-, hypo-, and isoechoic
How does an ultrasound probe indicator give directionality on the monitor?
the green dot on the screen corresponds to the side of the probe with the marker
What are the benefits of using an ultrasound?
- portable
- non-invasive
- identifies fluid in the thorax and abdomen
- defines organ texture
- displays organ motion
What are the challenges associated with using an ultrasound?
- subject to artifact: gas, mineral
- poor topography
- may not be able to see entire organ or system
- proves poor accountability for mistakes
- can be a large learning curve
What is echogenicity?
method used to compare one structure to another via lightness or darkness
Where should you keep the ultrasound probe marker when scanning a patient?
facing the patient’s right or the patient’s head
