Ultrafiltration Flashcards
1
Q
What is ultrafiltration?
A
it is the first stage of kidneys processing waste from blood
2
Q
What happens in ultrafiltration?
A
There is high hydrostatic pressure - afferent arteriole is wider than the efferent arteriole
small molecules are forced out into the bowman’s capsule to form the filtrate e.g. glucose, H2O, amino acids, ions, Urea
3
Q
What doesn’t fit through the gaps?
A
larger molecules
gaps in the capillary walls, gaps in basement membrane, gaps in podocytes
e.g. red blood cells and proteins cant fit
