Q

What is the function of the ascending limbs?

A

sodium and chloride ions are pumped out by active transport using ATP
this decreases the water potential o the medulla
impermeable to water - cant leave by osmosis

Q

What is the function of the descending limbs?

A

permeable to water
water moves out by osmosis
absorbed with capillaries
removes water from urine and increases concentration of urine

Q

What is the length of the loop of henle?

A

the longer the loop of henle, the more sodium and chloride ions will be pumped out
the more concentrated the medulla will be
therefore the more water is absorbed so we have concentrated urine

e.g. desert animals - camels
