What is a pregnancy test kit for?
test the urine for a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin - hCG
very small hormone - protein - that moves into filtrate during ultrafiltration
monoclonal antibodies on a test stick have a marker dye attaches
hCG attaches to complimentary antibodies
this moves along test strip and attaches to another fixed antibody
the marker becomes visible if hormone is present
What are anabolic steroids?
athletes are tested for performance enhancing drugs e.g. testosteorene / HGH
they can cause dangerous side effects e.g. liver failure
they test the urine and analyse the molecular mass of the compounds e.g. using mass spectroscopy
molecules have a specific finger print
What are recreational drugs?
employers test staff e.g. operating machinery
