U8 Section 2: Environmental & Medical Issues Flashcards
What is global warming?
The increase in temperature of the Earth’s atmosphere which is thought to be caused by the greenhouse effect.
Other than the greenhouse effect, what else do some scientists think is causing global warming?
Natural climate change and solar activity
If one possible solution for global warming
Increased use of public transport could greatly reduce carbon emissions.
What are the four main types of pollution?
Acid rain/carbon emissions
Human waste
Eutrophication/nitrates
Radioactive
Give two solutions to some of these pollutions
Acid rain solution – create electricity from wind, sun, tides and nuclear energy
Human waste solution – recycle, use incinerators to produce electricity, and sewage to produce methane gas
What are finite resources?
Resources that are running out for example oil, coal and ores
Give one solution that can prevent finite resources from running out.
We could use renewable resources to make electricity
What is conservation?
Protecting and preserving natural resources and the environment.
What is creation?
The act of creating the universe or the universe which has been created
What does the bible teach about stewardship?
Christians were given the right to rule over the earth by God in Genesis, but only as his stewards
What do Muslims believe about stewardship?
Should see this life is a test from God. The main part of the test is looking after the environment, those who fail the test will be punished
How do these beliefs about stewardship affect Christian and Muslim attitudes to the environment?
They should try to reduce pollution
By conserving animal and plant life
Why do some people argue following religious teachings on stewardship is futile?
The government action can deal with problems like the disposal of waste.
What is infertility?
Not been able to have children.
What is artificial insemination?
Injecting semen into the uterus by artificial means.
