Q

How does the example of Paleys watch argument help to explain that God made the world?

A

You cannot say a watch appears by chance it must be designed by a watch maker. Therefore the universe, which is more complicated, must need a universe maker. The only being that could design the world is God so god must exist.

Q

How does the idea of causation lead to someone’s belief in God?

A

If we look at things in the world we see they have a cause. Anything caused to exist must be caused by something else. Therefore the universe itself must have a cause. Only God could be the cause of the universe. Therefore god is the first cause and must exist.

Q

Do you believe that God created the universe?

A

I do not believe that God created the universe because Science can explain where the world and humans came from without any reference to God. As well as this, I have been brought up in an Atheist family thus I haven’t been brought up believing that there’s a God and that he created the world.

Q

How could the scientific explanation lead to agnosticism?

A

Agnostics look at how science can explain where the world and humans came from without any reference to God yet religion says that God created everything so some people are not sure what to believe; science or religion.

17
Q

How can the scientific explanation lead to atheism?

A

They are sure there is no God. The scientific explanation of the world and humans, without any reference to God, is proof to such people that God does not exist.

18
Q

Give one way in which Christians may respond to the scientific explanations of the origins of the world.

A

Many Christians believe that the scientific explanation proves that God created the universe:- the Big Bang had to be exactly the right microsecond- there had to be scientific laws such as gravity for the matter of the universe to form solar systems and only God could have made the laws on which they were based- Life on Earth required carbon to be able to bond with four other atoms and water molecules. This could not have happened by chance so god must have ensured that it happened.

19
Q

Why might unanswered prayers lead to some people not believing in God?

A

Atheists are confident that if God existed, and was omnibenevolent and omniscient then surely everyone’s prayers would be answered.

Many people experience suffering and pain in their lives or watch as family and friends suffer, and God seems to do nothing.

20
Q

Give one way in which Christians may respond to this idea of unanswered prayers.

A

If what you pray for is selfish, for example “please God help me to pass this exam” it would be wrong of God to allow you to pass the exam if you had not revised for it. So God is answering your prayer by encouraging you to work hard for what you want to achieve.

21
Q

Name the 2 forms of evil and suffering.

A

Moral and natural.

22
Q

Give 2 examples of moral evil.

A

Murder

Rape

23
Q

Give 2 examples of natural evil.

A

Hurricane

Volcanoes

24
Q

Some people do not believe in God because they think that there would be no evil and suffering in a world created by a Good and powerful God. What argument do they use to show this?

A

They believe that God is omnibenevolent, but if God is good then he would not want evil and suffering in his world. If he was omnipotent he must be able to get rid of evil and suffering from the world he created. However there is evil and suffering in the world, so either God is not good or God is not all powerful or God does not exist.

25
Q

Name two ways in which Christians respond to the problem of evil and suffering.

A

Saying that evil and suffering are the fault of humans misusing their free will.

Saying Jesus taught believers the need for prayer and good works, without evil and suffering we cannot do this.

26
Q

How might the Tv show ‘songs of praise’ encourage belief in God?

A

It showed that God and Christianity are relevant in the modern world e.g. Modern Churches and Moot for people who are spiritually searching.

The church members were out reaching their to their communities. God must exist to make these people help total strangers to change their life for the better.

27
Q

Why might ‘the most hated family in America’ discourage belief in God?

A

They say God hates everyone so why would a person want to believe in a God like this.

If believing in God causes this type of behaviour it can put a person off God.
