U8 Section 1- Rights And Responsibilities Flashcards
What is the Bible?
The holy book of Christians
Give two reasons why Christians use only the Bible to make moral decisions
It is the word of God and so is God’s guidance on how to make decisions.
It contains teachings of Jesus on how to live. As Christians believe he is the son of God, they should follow these.
State one reason why some Christians think the bible is not the most important guide for making moral decisions
They need the church to tell them what the bible means for today
What is the church?
The community of Christians
Why do some Christians see the church as the most important aid to making moral decisions?
Most Christians believe that God speaks to the world today through the church
What is conscience?
An inner feeling of the rightness or wrongness of an action
Give two reasons why some Christians believe they should follow their conscience
The voice of conscience seems to be the same as the voice of God
The church says that Christians should follow their conscience as if it were the voice of God
Why do some Christians think they should not always follow their conscience?
People have had the voice of ‘God’ telling them to do bad things
Why do some Christians use situation ethics to make moral decisions? give two reasons
Jesus seemed to follow situation ethics as he appeared to over-rule what the old Testament said when he thought it was unloving, for example when he did not allow an adulterous woman to be stoned to death
Christians should only do what will produce good results they should best decisions on love not laws
What is the Decalogue?
The 10 commandments
Give one reason why some Christians think situation ethics is wrong
They think the church knows better what Christians should do than an individual Christian
Why may the Bible be difficult to use when making decisions today?
It doesn’t mention modern issues like contraception or genetic engineering
What do Christians mean when they say the conscience has been corrupted by the fall?
When Adam and Eve who represented all of humanity disobeyed God, a curse fell upon the Earth which meant that it was no longer perfect
Whose teaching is situation ethics based on?
Jesus’
What is the golden rule?
The teaching of Jesus that you should treat others as you would like them to treat you
What are human rights?
The rights and freedoms to which everyone is entitled.
State two reasons why human rights are important
With no rights to freedom and a fair trial we could find ourselves living in a dictatorship because all opposition leaders are imprisoned
Everyone is meant to be treated equally so there should be no prejudice and discrimination, for example homosexuality is no longer a legal
Give one reason why human rights are not important
People abuse human rights laws, for example prisoners claiming that their punishment infringes their human rights
Why are human rights important to Christians?
God loves everyone equally so they should be treated equally
State one bible passage that supports human rights
Jesus’ sermon on the Mount
Why do some Christians not approve of all human rights?
Some Christians are against the right to marry a person from a different faith, they believe Christians should only marry Christians so that the children are brought up as Christians
what are democratic processes?
The ways in which all citizens can take part in government (usually through elections)
Give two reasons why it’s important to take part in democratic and electoral processes
You pay income tax on your wages and VAT on what you buy, voting gives you some control over how much this is
Local councils set the level of council tax you have to pay so voting gives you some control over how much this is
Give one reason why some people may be against taking part in democratic and electoral processes
One vote makes no difference to the outcome as there are six 60 million people in the UK
