U2 Section 4: Religion And Community Cohesion Flashcards
A) Multi-ethnic society.
Many different races and cultures living together in one society.
B) Do you think women should have equal rights?
Yes as I agree with liberal Protestants, the liberal Protestants teach that men and women should have equal roles in life, including religion. Many Protestant churches not only have equal roles for men and women but also have women ministers and priests too! They believe this as…
Paul said “there is neither male more female, you are all one person in Christ.”
Jesus treated women as equals and even had women followers for example Martha and her sister Mary.
They believe Jesus chose men as deciples because of the cultures at that time not for religious beliefs.
C) What are the problems for mixed faith marriages?
Often there will not be a religious wedding ceremony if the couple are from different religions.
Which religion will the children be brought up in? Religious parents are worried that they won’t see their children after death unless they stay in the same religion.
There is also the problem of death, will the couple have to be buried at separate parts of the cemetery according to their religion.
For the parents and relatives, there is often the feeling that their children will have betrayed their roots and family by falling in love with someone from a different religion.
D)i) Why would there still be racism if everyone were Christian?
Because some people have twisted the Bible like the KKK who believe black people are inferior to white people and call themselves Christians. Also, just because people call themselves Christians doesn’t mean that they actually are Christians. many people call themselves Christians but they do not follow what the Bible says about equality.
D)ii) Why might some people disagree with you about racism?
Because the Bible teaches Christians…
That God created all races in his image so everyone is equal.
That Jesus treated people of different races equally and Christians should follow his example.
The parable of the Good Samaritan shows that races who hate each other should love each other as neighbours.
Church statements condemn racism.
Lastly, there are famous people who have fought against racism, for example Martin Luther King
