what is a primary sleep disorder
a sleep disorder that cannot be explained by another condition
what is a secondary sleep disorder
a sleep problem that occurs as a result of another condition
e.g back pain
2 types of secondary sleep disorders
dyssomnias
parasomnias
what are dyssomnias
difficulty initiating, maintaining or timing of sleep
eg sleep onset insomnia
what is sleep onset insomnia
difficulty falling asleep
symptoms of sleep onset insomnia
failure to fall asleep within 30 minutes of trying
at least 3 times per week for at least 3 months
reduced amount of sleep
causes problems with everyday functioning
what is a parasomnia
occurrence of inappropriate physiological activity during sleep
e.g sleep walking
symptoms of sleep walking
eyes open
can perform basic tasks
less than 15 minutes
if not disturbed they will return to bed
confusion if woken up
3 and 4 NREM
