U3 AOS2 Dot Point 3 Flashcards
what is classical conditioning
when two things occur together we associate them with each other so that when one appears we expect the other to follow and we react accordingly
what is the neutral stimulus
stimulus that doesn’t produce a predictable response
what is the unconditioned stimulus
stimulus that naturally and consistently produces a response
what is the conditioned stimulus
same as the neutral stimulus but eventually triggers a response which is the same as then caused by the unconditioned stimulus
what is the conditioned response
learned response produces by the conditioned stimulus which occurs after association has occurred
3 phases of classical conditioning
preconditioning
acquisition
post-conditioning
what occurs in preconditioning stage of classical conditioning
NS causes no response
UCS causes UCR
what occurs in the acquisition stage of classical conditioning
NS followed by UCS (repeated association) causes UCR
what occurs in the post-conditioning stage of classical conditioning
CS causes CR
what is stimulus generalisation in classical conditioning
the tendency for another stimulus that is similar to the CS to also cause the CR or similar response.
what is stimulus discrimination in classical conditioning
when someone responds only to the CS bit not any other similar stimuli
what is extinction in classical conditioning
the gradual decrease in strength or rate of CR the occurs when the UCS is no longer presented
what is spontaneous recovery in classical conditioning
the reappearance of the CR when the CS is presented after extinction seems to have occurred
