U3 Photosynthesis Flashcards
What are the two stages of photosynthesis?
Light reactions and carbon fixation
What are the raw materials for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide, water and light
What traps the light energy for photosynthesis trapped?
Chlorophyll in chloroplasts
What happens in the light reaction?
Light energy is trapped by chloroplasts and converted to chemical energy to form ATP.
Water is split using the chemical energy to make hydrogen and oxygen.
Oxygen diffuses out the cell.
What happens in carbon fixation?
Hydrogen from the light reaction is chemically bonded with carbon dioxide by using ATP to produce glucose.
What can glucose from photosynthesis be used for?
It can be used for respiration, converted to starch or converted to cellulose
What are limiting factors of photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide concentration, light intensity and temperature
