U2 Transport Systems - Plants Flashcards
What are the 3 plant organs?
Leaves, Roots and Stem
What are the 7 structures found inside a leaf?
Upper Epidermis, Palisade Mesophyll, a Vein, Spongy Mesophyll, Lower Epidermis, Guard Cells and Stomata
What are the two parts of a plant vein?
Xylem and Phloem
How is water absorbed and transported by plants?
Root hair cells absorb water via osmosis, the water is then brought up the xylem to leaves where it may be used for transpiration by the stomata or photosynthesis
What is the role of lignin?
Allows the xylem to withstand pressure changes as water moves through the plant
What is transpiration?
The process of water moving through a plant an evaporating at the stomata.
What controls the stomata?
Guard cells
What increases the rate of transpiration
Low humidity, high wind speeds, high temperature and a high surface area
What is the role of the phloem tissue?
Transports sugar up and down plants
Structure of Phloem
Contains sieve plates and companion cells.
