U2 Transport Systems - Animals Flashcards
What does blood contain?
Blood plasma, white blood cells, red blood cells
What does blood transport?
Nutrients, oxygen and carbon dioxide
What allows blood to transport oxygen?
It’s biconcave shape, lack of a nucleus and haemoglobin
What does oxygen and haemoglobin form?
Oxyhaemoglobin
What is a pathogen?
A disease causing microbe
What are the two type of white blood cells?
Lymphocytes and Phagocytes
What is phagocytosis?
When phagocytes engulf and digest pathogens
What do lymphocytes produce?
Anti-bodies specific to pathogens
What carries deoxygenated blood to the heart?
Vena Cava
What carries deoxygenated blood from the heart?
Pulmonary Artery
What carries oxygenated blood to the heart?
Pulmonary Vein
What carries oxygenated blood away from the heart?
Aorta
Where is deoxygenated blood received in the heart?
Right Atrium
Where does deoxygenated blood leave the heart?
Right ventricle
Where does oxygenated blood enter the heart?
Left Atrium
Where does oxygenated blood leave the heart?
Left Ventricle
What is the structure of an Artery?
Has a thick muscular wall, a narrow central channel and carries blood under high pressures away from the heart.
What is the structure of a vein?
Contain valves stopping blood backflow, thinner walls, a wider channel and carry blood under low pressure to the heart.
What is the structure of a blood capillary?
Thin walled with a large surface area allowing for efficient exchange of materials
What supplies the heart with oxygenated blood?
The coronary artery
