U2 Control And Communication Flashcards
What does the CNS consist of?
Brain and Spinal Cord
What are the 3 parts of the brain?
Medulla, Cerebrum, Cerebellum
What is the role of the Cerebellum?
Controls balance, movement and vision
What is the role of the Cerebrum?
Controls conscious thoughts, memory and emotion
What is the role of the Medulla?
Controls your cardiovascular and respiratory systems by controlling; heart rate, blood pressure and breathing
What are the three types of neurons?
Sensory neurons, inter neurons and motor neurons
How are messages carried along neurons?
By electrical impulses
What do receptors do?
They detect sensory input and stimuli
How are messages transferred between neurons?
They are chemically diffused across the synapse between the Sensory + Inter Neurons then later the Inter + Motor Neurons
What glands release hormones?
Endocrine Glands
What are hormones?
Chemical messengers
What does a target tissue contain?
Complementary receptors for specific proteins
What does insulin do?
Decreases blood glucose levels by converting glucose to glycogen
What does glucagon do?
Increasing blood glucose levels by converting glycogen to glucose
Where are insulin and glucagon produced?
Inside the pancreas
