U1 Respirarion Flashcards
What is respiration?
A series of enzyme controlled reactions which involves the release of chemical energy stored in glucose.
What is produced from respiration?
ATP, Water and Oxygen
What are uses of ATP
Muscle contraction, Active transport, cell division and transmission of nerve impulses.
What is the first stage of respiration?
Glycolysis involves the breakdown of glucose into two pyruvate molecules, it also yields enough energy to form 2 ATP.
What are the products of aerobic respiration?
Carbon dioxide + water + lots of ATP
What are the products of fermentation in yeast cells?
Ethanol + Carbon dioxide , ATP is only formed during glycolysis
What are the products of fermentation in animal cells?
Lactate
Where does fermentation occur?
Inside the cytoplasm
Where does aerobic respiration occur?
Inside the mitochondria
Where does glycolysis occur?
Inside the cytoplasm
Why would a cell contain more mitochondria?
It requires more energy
