Q

What are the characteristics of carbs?

A
  • Contain C, H and O w/a general formula of (CH2O)n
  • Contain a high # of OH groups making them polar and dissolvable in water

Q

What are alpha and beta links?

A
  • The OH on C1 can be formed on the top or bottom during glucose formation in photosynthesis.
  • Alpha: on bottom
  • Beta: on top

Q

What are disaccharides + glycosidic bond types?

A

Two monosaccharides joined tg by a covalent bond (called a GLYCOSIDIC LINKAGE)

1) Glucose + fructose –> sucrose

2) Glucose + Glucose –> Maltose

3) Glucose + galactose –> Lactose

Q

What are polysaccharides?

A

Many monosaccharides joined tg by a glycosidic linkages.

  • EX: starch, cellulose (gives plants structure), chitin, glycogen (energy storage polysaccharide produced by animals)
