Q

How does waters high heat capacity affect its ability to absorb thermal energy?

A

Hydrogen bonding in water causes it to absorb alot of heat before its temp increases, and loose alot of heat before its temp decreases - causes temp modification in organisms.

Q

How does waters high heat capacity of vaporization affect its ability to absorb thermal energy?

A

Hydrogen bonding in water causes it to absorb alot of heat and vaporize into a gas - causes evaporative cooling.

Q

What is the property that explains why solid water is less dense then liquid water? Whats it effect?

A

Water has its highest density at 4C —> when water reaches below 0C, it forms a crystalline lattice structure that causes the hydrogen bonds within the water molecules to move further apart. This lowers the density of solid water - causes ice to float on water.
