Types Of Weathering Flashcards
1
Q
Weathering?
A
The physical, chemical or biological breakdown of solid rock by the action of the weather or plants
2
Q
What happens during freeze thaw weathering
A
- Water becomes trapped in the rock
- temperatures drop below zero freezing the water and causing it to expand the rock
- when the temperature rises again the ice melts
- the process repeats again weakening the rock
3
Q
What happens in biological weathering?
A
Living things such as plants or burrowing animals accidentally attack the rock putting pressure on it and causing cracks weakening their structure eventually splitting the rock
4
Q
Chemical weathering
A
Naturally acidic rain reacts with calcium carbonate rock
The calcium carbonate dissolves and is washed away in solution weakening the rock
