Collecting River Data Flashcards
What type of data are we collecting when measuring width of a river?
Primary and quantitative
What type of sampling method are we using when measuring width?
Random because any area of river section were in has a chance of being measured
What is the method for measuring the width of a river?
1) I took the zero end of the tape measure and placed it at the waterline of one bank of the river
2) another student pulled the tape measure across to the opposite side of the river bank and placed it where the water met the bank
What type of data did we collect when measuring depth of a river?
Primary and quantitative
What type of sampling method did we use when measuring the depth?
Systematic because we worked in a system to collect data by dividing the width of the river by 4 and measuring at the 4 points
What is the method for measuring the depth of a river?
1) I took the tape and measure the width of the river, then using a calculator we divided the width by 4 (by doing this we found the points at which we needed to measure the depth)
2) As one person held the measuring tape in place across the river, the other person placed the meter stick at each of the 4 points and measured the depth
Why are we measuring width?
To find out how width of the river changes downstream - this is important because our hypothesis states that flood risk will increase downstream due to an increase in lateral erosion which means that an increase in width will begin to form meanders and so as the river goes around the bend most water will be pushed towards the outside bend
Why are we measuring depth?
The find out how the depth changed depending on how close it was to the banks/downstream. Pur hypothesis states that flood risk will increase as the river travels downstream due to more water being added to the river by tributaries, this means more water therefore higher river discharge
