Hard And Soft Engineering Happisburgh Flashcards
What is hard engineering
A technique involving construction of man made structures to manage the coastline
What is soft engineering
A technique involving the construction of more environmentally friendly, less damaging and sustainable management solutions
What is cost benefit analysis
Working out all the benefits of something and comparing it with the problems that the new ideas may create
What is a sea wall and and advantage and disadvantage
Concrete barrier built at the foot of the cliffs
A - effective at stopping the sea
D - can block views and is unnatural to look at
What are groynes and advantage and disadvantage
Timber or rock structures built out to sea from the coast that trap sediment moved by longshore drift
A - not too expensive
D - stop other beaches from getting sediment and often leads to more erosion elsewhere
What is Rock armour and advantage and disadvantage
Pile of large boulders dumped at the foot of a cliff
A - quite cheap and easy to look after
D- do not fit in with local geology
What is beach nourishment and advantage and disadvantage
Adding sand and shingle to the beach to make it higher or broader
A - blends in with existing beach
D - needs constant maintenance
What is dune regeneration and advantage and disadvantage
Marram grass is planted to stabilise the dines and help them develop
A- keeps a natural coastal environment
D - can be damaged by storms
What is marsh creation and advantage and disadvantage
Involves allowing low lying coastal areas to be flooded by the sea to become salt marshes
A - creates habitat for wildlife
D - land will be lost as it will be flooded by sea water
What are garbinos and advantage and disadvantage
Cages of boulders built into the cliffs face
A - effective where dealing with servers erosion taking place
D - environmentally ugly
What is wooden revetment and advantage and disadvantage
Wooden structure that breaks the force of the wave and traps beach material behind it
A - creates a bigger beach
D - may need replacing more often
