global circulation Flashcards
1
Q
what is global circulation
A
worldwide system of winds which transport heat from tropical to polar latitudes
2
Q
what are the 3 cells in the hemisphere
A
Hadley
Ferrell
Polar
3
Q
what happens in the Hadley cell
A
warm air rises at the equator and travels north where it comes down and sinks to the surface
(low pressure)
4
Q
what happens in the polar cell
A
cold air sinks to the North Pole before flowing south
at the south it’s warmed by contact with land/ocean and then begins to rise again
(high pressure)
5
Q
what does that Ferrell cell do?
A
thermally indirect as it’s powered by two other cells
those cells are powered by the sun
(high pressure)
