types of training Flashcards
what is circuit training
•involves working on a number of exercises or activities arranged stations
•the stations can work on different muscle groups and are usually followed by rest periods
• the circuit can/could be repeated many/several times
what are the advantages of circuit training
•can work on different muscle groups/components of fitness
•could be skill based
•can make it simple or complex
•can be specific to certain sports
•can be anaerobic or aerobic
what are the disadvantages of circuit training
•requires space, equipment and time
•requires high motivation
who would benefit from circuit training
games players
what is continuous training
•involves activity that can be sustained without rest and repeated over and over
•involves working at a constant state or intensity
•improves cardio-vascular endurance
what are the advantages of continuous training
•good for aerobic fitness
•need minimal equipment and simple to do
•same movements over and over again loses weight and is good for long distance athletes
what are the disadvantages of continuous training
•especially boring if repeated
•doesn’t apply to all sports
•not good for anaerobic sports
•can cause injuries by doing repeated actions
who would benefit from continuous training
long distance runners, swimmers, rowers and cyclists
what is fartlek training
•known as speed play and normally involves running
•that means speed is altered throughout different terrains
•intensity can be varied
what are the advantages of fartlek training
•anaerobic and aerobic systems
•needs little or no equipment
•good for many sports
what are the disadvantages of fartlek training
•tiring
•high levels of motivation needed
•difficult to measure
who would benefit from fartlek training
any invasion game players
what is interval training/high intensity interval training (HIIT)
•training involving periods of work followed by periods of rest
•lactic acid and oxygen dept builds up during interval training
•rest/recovery phase allows recovery from these levels (can balance oxygen levels etc.)
•HIIT: an exercise strategy alternating periods of short intense anaerobic exercise with less intense recovery periods
what are the advantages of interval and high intensity training
•mixing between aerobic and anaerobic
•less chance of boredom
•easy to set up
•easy to monitor progress or a coach to monitor where athletes struggles
what are the disadvantages of interval and high intensity training
•can become boring - needs motivation
•can become fatigue quite early on
